Do The Thrashers Have Large Talons?

Two Deals are Better than One.

Well the trade price has come down a bit. Last night the team made one deal for Zhitnik (which I will break down in another post) and another deal is extremely likely to happen very soon. If I were a Thrasher fan I would keep one eye on hockey news outlets on Sunday.

  • I think Zhitnik will help give us some "defensive identity" (to borrow a phrase one of my friends used last night), something the Thrashers have needed since Andy Sutton got injured earlier this year. I'm not sure we should have offered Coburn, but he hadn't turned into Phaneuf by a long shot yet and we needed a shot of something a month ago.

Hopefully we can pull another moderately priced guy at center.

  • I am sorry to see Coburn go. He clearly wasn't developing nearly as fast as Phaneuf, but they always say that D-men take the longest to develop at the NHL level. The difference in Coburn this year vs. last year (in Atlanta, not the AHL), was HUGE. I would be surprised if in another season or two he is not logging 20+ minutes of ice time every night. As DW said last night, our future is now, so maybe he had to make a move, but considering the absolute dearth of defensive prospects in the Thrashers' organization, I hate to see him go.
